Cromwell Day 4th September 2006
The annual Cromwell Association service of commemoration
for Oliver Cromwell in 2006 took place on Monday September 4th, the day
following the anniversary of Cromwell’s death in 1658. The decision to
hold the service on the day after the anniversary was taken in the light
of the difficulties of holding the service on the 3rd which fell on a
Sunday.
The service was held in the chapel of Central Hall Westminster, by kind
permission of the Superintendent Minister. The Reverend Roger Greeves
conducted the service and Mr Edgar Samuel gave the address on the theme
of Cromwell and the Readmission of the Jews to England. Mr Samuel is a
former curator of the Jewish Museum in London.
Prior to the service a wreath was laid on the bust of Cromwell that is
located within the Palace of Westminster, by kind permission of the
Sergeant at Arms. The President of the Association Professor Coward and
Mr Samuel laid the wreath.
It is hoped that in 2007 the wreath will be able to be laid on the
statue of Cromwell by Thorneycroft that stands on Cromwell Green. This
was impossible in 2006 due to building works.
All members of the Association are invited each year to participate in
the service.
