£1500 available for The Cromwell Association Research Grant

Are you undertaking research into an aspect of Cromwell, or the wider history of the 17th Century? This year the Association is extending eligibility for its Research Grants to non-affiliated researchers, as well as to post-graduate students, both in the UK and beyond. For more details of how to apply see here. Applications must be submitted by the end of April 2026, with decisions by the end of May.

Schools’ History Conference 2026

Our annual conference for A level students will take place on Thursday 25^th June in Huntingdon. There will be a morning session of debates between historians, on some of the key questions of the period, followed by workshop sessions in the afternoon. Places are modestly priced and a travel grant is on offer. For more information about the event see here.

Essay competition 2025

The winner of the 2025 essay competition is Arwen Singh of the George Walton Comprehensive High School, Georgia, USA. Congratulations to Arwen. His winning entry which answers the question To what extent does the personal rule by Charles I, from 1629-1640, deserve the description ‘the eleven years tyranny?’ can be read here…

Cromwell Day 2025

On Saturday 6th September 2025, the Association held its annual service of commemoration for Oliver Cromwell, in the side chapel of Methodist Central Hall, Westminster. After the service a memorial wreath was laid, at the foot of the Cromwell statue, by Professor Alice Hunt (left) and Dr Ismini Pells (right). Thanks to the parliamentary authorities for allowing this, and to the Met Police for their assistance on the day.

University courses on the Civil War

The number of university courses that focus solely on the Civil War, Commonwealth and Protectorate is small and apparently diminishing. The Association has compiled a database of all relevant courses at UK universities together with an
article which describes the state of teaching of the early modern period in higher education.

British Civil War Memorials

A fully searchable resource of memorials connected to the British Civil Wars 1639-1660, has been created by the Battlefields Trust in partnership with the Cromwell Association and six other organisations. Click here to discover more.
