Schools’ History Conference 2025

The annual conference aimed at A level students, took place in early July, and was kindly hosted by Magdalen College School, Oxford. The morning session of debates, between two historians chaired by a third, were recorded by the World Turned Upside website team, for which the Association is very grateful. These lively debates on three keys issues can be found here.

Essay competition 2025

The winner of the 2025 essay competition is Arwen Singh of the George Walton Comprehensive High School, Georgia, USA. Congratulations to Arwen. His winning entry which answers the question To what extent does the personal rule by Charles I, from 1629-1640, deserve the description ‘the eleven years tyranny?’ can be read here…

Cromwell Day 2025

On Saturday 6th September 2025, the Association held its annual service of commemoration for Oliver Cromwell, in the side chapel of Methodist Central Hall, Westminster. After the service a memorial wreath was laid, at the foot of the Cromwell statue, by Professor Alice Hunt (left) and Dr Ismini Pells (right). Thanks to the parliamentary authorities for allowing this, and to the Met Police for their assistance on the day.

University courses on the Civil War

The number of university courses that focus solely on the Civil War, Commonwealth and Protectorate is small and apparently diminishing. The Association has compiled a database of all relevant courses at UK universities together with an
article which describes the state of teaching of the early modern period in higher education.

A fully searchable resource of memorials connected to the British Civil Wars 1639-1660, has been created by the Battlefields Trust in partnership with the Cromwell Association and six other organisations. Click here to discover more.
