Essay competition 2025

Open to all  students aged 16-18 years old, the question to be answered is To what extent does the personal rule by Charles I, from 1629-1640, deserve the description ‘the eleven years tyranny’?
Entries should be of no more than 2000 words and submitted to [email protected] by Friday 25th July 2025.
The prize is £250, and the winning essay will be published in our journal Cromwelliana.

University courses on the Civil War

The number of university courses that focus solely on the Civil War, Commonwealth and Protectorate is small and apparently diminishing. The Association has compiled a database of all relevant courses at UK universities together with an
article which describes the state of teaching of the early modern period in higher education.

Post Graduate Research Grant 2025

The Cromwell Association is offering a grant of up to £1500 to post-graduate students at a university or similar institution, anywhere in the world, engaged in research on any subject that is relevant to the life and legacy of Oliver Cromwell, or more broadly the British Civil Wars, the Interregnum or the Restoration. The closing date for applications is 30th April 2025, with decision announced by the end of May 2025. Full details and application (Word format) available for download here
